Ideas for Gen 1 upgrades?

I'm wondering what everyone is doing for upgrades on your Gen 1s? I currently have a wireless backup camera that I installed, but I will be installing a touch screen radio with a wired backup camera. I would like to find a way to get a garage door opener that will open newer garage doors. My 2001 Sequoia will not work with my current garage door. What are some other things you are doing to 'modernize' your Gen 1?

Suspension upgrades from FirstGenOffroad or SRQ Fabrication.

New stereo and speakers from Crutchfield.

Sound deadening mats from Amazon.

Wolfbox front/rear view cameras.

Ultra gauge OBDII display.

Upgrade all interior lights with LEDs (superbrightled.com is a good resource)

Projector headlamp housing from TEQ Customs.

Those are upgrades I made to my 2005. It’ll never be as fancy as the new cars but it’ll certainly last longer!

I've been slowly upgrading over the last year on my 2001 Limited 4wd:

Suspension (upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, front struts, 2" front lift pucks (was 3", rear already 3"), poly sway bushings, poly steering rack bushings, 1" front diff drop)

Stereo, speakers, and video:
Kicker KSS365 (front doors) and KS 6.5 peakers (rear doors) Alpine touchscreen radio and matching Alpine powerpack amp (50 watts x 4 channels), charge ports (6 of them--2 front, 1 lower rear center console, 2 for 3rd row, 1 for rear storage area), back-up and front camera, and front and rear dash cams. While there is some complexity to the install (bypassing factory JBL amps, repinning wire harnesses, fishing wires thru rear hatch, etc), if you use YouTube and AI searches, you can find all the details to do the install. I'm wondering what everyone is doing to increase fuel economy. I'm getting around 13MPG, and I'd like to get at least 3MPG better if possible. I purchased an Innovative Performance Chip device, and it doesn't seem to do anything. Thanks for the help!

Triple check tire pressure and drive slower. You can also Google “hypermiling” and steal some of those ideas. Granted, don’t be that jerk doing 55 in the fast lane…just saying.

I'd make sure your plugs are up to date, new fuel filter, and replace all O2 sensors-- thats what I plan to do next to see if it helps with my 11.5 mpg mileage.

I read the fuel filter in the 05 is tucked inside the tank next to the fuel pump. Is it different on the 01-04 models?

Fairly sure 01-07 is outside the tank on the driver's side frame next to the fuel tank. Check out this video.

I just crawled under the truck and there is no filter down there. I checked the repair manual and one section talks about the filter being on the rail (like the video) but another section calls out the 05-07 models as having a filter incorporated into the fuel pump located inside the tank. I’ll ask the mechanic next time I’m there.

Expensive but probably one of my favorite modifications is a solid roof rack. There is a ton of real estate on top of these vehicles. I think the fuel economy loss is negligible:

Cargo floor mat, nothing I could find fit the entire length of the cargo area up to the 2nd row seats but this one is wide enough, covers 80%-90% of the rear floor length wise, thin enough to fit under the interior side panels and can be cut for access to the seat brackets and tie down locations so the 3rd row can still be installed:

There are a ton of LED drop in options on head lights that are significantly brighter then factory. I think 1st gens are H4 / 9003 style bulbs. Search amazon for "9003 LED headlights" and get something with a good size heat sink on the back.

When it comes to fuel economy I don't think there is too much your going to be able to do outside of driving habits and general maintenance(pump up those tires!). The 2UZ is a pretty solid 10-14mpg engine. Obviously weight and aerodynamics factor into any modifications you might do, e.g. lifts, bumpers, roof racks, tires etc. When we do any engine work on high mileage(200k mi+) Tundra, Land Cruisers, GX and Sequoias, anything with a 2UZ we rebuild the injector rails. There are tiny filter screens on top of each injector that get debris build up. The kits are cheap enough:

I would say difficulty level is somewhere around doing valve covers so might be something you take to your trusted mechanic. Removing the screens themselves can be difficult, we use an easy out in a vice to impale the injector tip/filter, twist to break free and remove.
