Hello everyone -
Long time Toyota owner, looking to purchase a new 2026 Sequoia as soon as they can get it ordered the way I want it - next month or two, hopefully. Not getting the TRD Off-Road package on this one as I ended up replacing most of those functional parts on my Tacoma anyway, and the wife doesn't like all the appearance pieces that come with it. It will be her car, the family hauler, and she wants "classy" over "sporty" so I have to keep most of my mods rather incognito, but still going for functional. She does not want to give up any 4wheeling performance over the 4Runner we're selling to get the Sequoia.
Did a bit of modding on my '06 Tacoma, but it won't seat the whole family. We used our stock '15 4Runner for a while, but that was a two row and we need the extra room/seatbelts for carpooling. Sequoia should fit the bill, but looking to get it trail ready. 4Runner was a stock Limited and did ~80-90% of what we wanted on the trail, but looking to be able to tackle a little bit more challenging terrain with the Sequoia (slightly counter intuitive looking for better 4wheeling in a Sequoia over a 4Runner perhaps, but we need something that fits the family.)
We're a family of five (kids age 4-8) and got the Limited so we could get the bench seat second row. Planning on keeping the kids three across on the bench as long as they'll fit & will probably remove the third row for camping/trail trips. No rock crawling on the horizon.
What mods do you recommend for a brand new vehicle looking to do some light to moderate trails? - Right now, mostly looking at skid plates, recovery points, biggest tires that will fit on a Limited trim with the stock suspension, best way to limit/prevent pin striping since it will be brand new. Had more pin striping than I like on the 4Runner and knowing the Sequoia is wider and will be brand new has me looking for a solution... Read a bit that the magnetic paint protection panels sometimes do more harm than good, but the track tape might help and be a better option? Lift will have to be down the line - not immediate with the purchase.
I've been looking at NYTOP skid plate assembly (except the one that requires removing the air dam, leaning towards leaving that on for now until it gets broken on a trail, lol). Also, their rear hybrid bumper/recovery point, front recovery points, rock sliders when they release them, and maybe the titanium rear axle exhaust dump...
If there are better companies/products out there, let me hear it! We all know what they say about opinions, but I also realize there's no substitute for the experience people have already gained from trial/error and research on these forums.
Thanks in advance for the help!
