Is premium fuel required for the new Sequoia? What octane is everyone running?

From page 550 of the 2023 Sequoia Owner's Manual:
Fuel:
  • Fuel type: Unleaded gasoline only
  • Octane rating: 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher

So, premium fuel is not required, and using it will not result in any additional benefit.

Thank you! It amazes me that Toyota tuned the Sequoia to work on 87, but yet the new Land Cruiser requires premium, and the fuel mileage is nearly the same.

FWIW ... I would have been very reluctant to have bought my 2024 if it required premium gas. Other comparable vehicles I looked at (e.g. Grand Wagoneer) required premium ... making it less affordable than it already was.

My 2024 Toyota Sequoia Capstone comes with a twin-turbocharged 3.4L V6 hybrid (i-Force MAX) engine. According to Toyota’s official specifications and owners manual, premium fuel (91 octane or higher) is recommended but not required.

What Happens If You Use 87 Octane?
The engine control unit (ECU) can adjust to lower octane fuel, but you may experience reduced power and efficiency.
Possible engine knocking under heavy load or towing conditions.
Long-term use of lower octane fuel may lead to increased carbon buildup in turbocharged engines.

Should You Use 93 Octane?
Yes, if you want peak performance and efficiency.
Higher octane (91-93) helps the turbochargers function optimally, preventing pre-detonation (knocking).
If you tow frequently or drive in hot climates, 93 octane is the best choice for engine longevity and fuel efficiency.

Bottom Line:
While your Sequoia can run on 87 octane, 91+ is recommended to protect the twin-turbo setup and ensure maximum performance. If 93 is available, it’s a great choice, but 91 should suffice.
